Leptospermum scoparium

Manuka is a bush with narrow and sometimes brown leaves. In spring and early summer it puts forth white, red and pink flowers. Oil can be extracted from the wildlife species. The best manuka oil can be extracted from the plant growing at high altitude. It was discovered that this oil has got more intense anti-bacterial properties than the one extracted from the plants grown at lower altitudes. Almost colorless essential oil is extracted from leaves by steam distillation. Key elements are caryophyllen, geraniol, pinene, linalol, humulene. It also contains a rather unusual element, leptospermone which has got strong insecticidal properties. The smell of this oil is almost imperceptible – it is very sweet and gentle.

Manuka oil, as well as tea tree oil, has got pronounced antiviral, antifungal properties and is effective against a wide range of bacteria. It can be used for the treatment of respiratory diseases: cold, sinusitis, bronchitis, etc. Its additional advantage is that it can also be decongestant. I applied it baths for cold and as a gargle for sore throat, besides, I anointed a starting cold sore on my lips with pure oil, and in all cases it appeared to be extremely effective. It has got very pleasant smell, so it can be easily evaporated in the rooms during epidemics.

Excellent antiseptic properties make it possible to successfully apply this oil to treat stains, burns and ulcers on the skin, especially in cases where the healing process is going on slowly. If necessary, manuka oil can be anointed on the skin in its pure form, although it should be taken into consideration that the oil dries the skin, especially when it is used repeatedly. It is possible to anoint pimples with this oil, but for massage it should be dissolved so that the skin cannot be dried up. The proper concentration for massage oil is from 1,5 to 2%. I suggest dissolving oil in a fatty oil-base, for example avocado oil or jojoba oil, for those people who have dry or sensitive skin.

Manuka has got antihistaminic effect and eliminates the allergy symptoms. Manuka oil is good for insect bites and sting. Probably, one should try to use it in case of hives, as well as in case of asthmatic attacks and pollen fever (here I say "probably" because I had no chance to test it in such situations). It is a good local analgesic, which is very effective for rheumatic and muscular pains.

Manuka oil is an effective insecticide, and a pleasant aroma makes it particularly suitable to be used in aerosol or aroma lamp. Delicate aroma means that you can mix manuka with any oil, used for medicinal purposes. It also can be used in the case when the patient does not like strong smell of oil medicine.

Having anti-infective properties, manuka oil is a good alternative to tea tree oil, although it doesn’t have its immunostimulative properties; especially it is helpful in case of long-term care. In comparison with tea tree oil, mamuka oil has got other, not less valuable properties, due to which it can reasonably be included in our range of essential oils.

Our laboratory has developed a new balm 911 – Myrtle. It is now being clinically tested in the leading hospital of our country. After getting feedbacks of the doctors and beauticians we shall produce a new balm line with myrtle oil. In Polynesia it is known as Manuka oil (Leptospermum scoparium). We have preserved its unique properties our new balms by using unique NR-complex.

The existing technology of essential oils extraction from plant raw materials is based upon their organic solvent infusion or vapour sublimation. It involves substantial losses in volatile odorants and causes distortion in nature components balance in essential oils and their unnecessary quality decrease.

The application of the essential oils technology based on the infusion from the plants by carbon dioxide (carbon-dioxide extraction) can help to extract substantially full range of the volatile odorants being in their nature balance and high concentration (98-99%) from the plant raw materials. Carbon-dioxide extracts can be used in food, perfume and cosmetic production, non-alcohol beer, distilled beverages, confectionery, meat, medicine, fish industry and household cleaning products.

Clinical presentation of many skin diseases include dryness of skin, inflammatory processes, excessive peeling, which indicates towards the disruption of the skin barrier function. Disorder of penetrability is the initial pathogenetic link provoking unhealthy changes. Recent discoveries of researchers-scientists, who were searching for the ways to deal with such diseases as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and eczema, have provided the information that the main factor in the development of these diseases is not only the decrease of the overall and skin immune protection (decrease in the ability of the skin to function as protection and to resist the penetration into the organism of outside health disruptors – infections and bacteria), but, on the first place, it is the insult to the upper layer of epidermis – its corneal layer. It is precisely the conditions, under which skin neurons receive numerous signals about the insult to the corneal and lipid layer, that lead to what we define as eczema, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In such cases, the cells of kerotinocytes become dispossessed of their construction materials or nutrition for their metabolism. They do not receive the indispensable fatty acids and the most important of them – Linoleic acid.
